School Readiness: what "Kindy-ready" looks like at Landsdale Early Learning and Enrichment

Is your child starting kindy next year? If you're a Perth parent wondering what "school ready" actually means, and whether your little one is there yet, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we hear from families at Landsdale Early Learning and Enrichment (LELE).

School readiness isn't a single milestone. It's a collection of skills that develop naturally over time and at Landsdale Early Learning and Enrichment, preparing children for kindy is woven into everything we do.

Here's what kindy-ready looks like in our preschool room, and how we're helping children get there.

It's about more than knowing the alphabet

When most people think of school readiness, they picture academic skills, counting to 10, recognising letters, writing their name. And while those things matter, they're only part of the picture.

True school readiness includes:

  • Language and literacy: being able to express needs, follow instructions, and engage in conversations

  • Social and emotional skills:managing big feelings, taking turns, forming friendships

  • Cognitive development: curiosity, problem-solving, the ability to focus and follow through

  • Independence: things like putting on shoes, washing hands, and managing their belongings

  • Confidence: the belief that they can try new things, even if they're hard

At Landsdale ELE, our preschool program deliberately nurtures all of these areas and not just the academic ones.

How our School Readiness Program works

Our preschool room (catering to children aged 4 to 5 years) runs a structured School Readiness Program, led by our qualified Early Childhood Teacher, Demel. The program follows the Early Years Learning Framework and is designed to prepare children for the Australian Kindergarten Curriculum.

"Structured" doesn't mean sitting at desks. It means:

  • Play-based, child-led learning: children explore, discover, and build skills through activities that genuinely interest them

  • Intentional teaching: our educators observe each child closely and design experiences that stretch their thinking and development

  • Routine and rhythm: a consistent daily structure helps children understand time, anticipate what's next, and feel secure

  • Family input: your knowledge of your child shapes the experiences we plan for them

The learning happens in quiet reading corners, at sensory stations, in the art area, through construction play, in the home corner, and out in our outdoor space — where children develop gross motor skills on playground equipment, explore the garden, and engage in sand play.

Indoors and out, children move freely between spaces in what we call a "free-flow" approach and choosing where they want to play, building decision-making skills and independence along the way.

Preparing for the classroom environment

One thing that makes the transition to big school easier is familiarity. When children arrive at kindy having already experienced group learning, classroom routines, and educational technology, they feel more confident from day one.

That's why our preschool room includes a television used strictly for educational purposes and introducing children to the kind of interactive learning they'll encounter with whiteboards and screens at school.

Routine matters too. Children who understand what "morning circle" or "pack away time" means, and who can follow multi-step instructions, are already ahead of the curve when kindy begins.

School Transition Reports

At the end of the year, every child in our preschool receives a School Transition Report, a detailed summary of their development, skills, strengths and interests.

This report is designed to be shared directly with your child's new teacher, creating a bridge between their time at Landsdale Early Learning and their first weeks of school. It helps educators understand who your child is before they even walk through the door.

It's one of the ways we make sure nothing gets lost in the transition and that the relationships and progress built here carry forward.

The team behind it

Our preschool room is led by Demel, our Early Childhood Teacher, Educational Leader, and Room Leader, who has been with us since 2021. Alongside her is Tarandeep, our Second in Charge, who joined the team in 2022 and brings calm, warmth and dedication to every day.

Together, they create a preschool environment that children love coming to and that families trust!
