FAQ: Our Settling Into Care program
Starting childcare is a big moment for children and for parents
Whether it is your first child or your third, the first weeks of childcare can bring a mix of excitement, nerves and a few tears (sometimes more from the parents than the children!).
At Landsdale Early Learning and Enrichment, we understand that settling into care is not a single day, it is a gentle process. Our approach is built around secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships, and we take the time to get to know your child and your family before, during and after those first important weeks.
It starts with orientation: two free plays before day one
Before your child's first official day, we encourage every family to attend two free orientation plays, where your child visits the centre in the company of a family member.
These visits give you and your child the chance to explore the room together, find where things live, meet the educators and get a feel for the rhythm of the day, all without the pressure of a goodbye. It is also a valuable opportunity to share information about your child: their routines, comfort items, likes, worries and anything else that will help us support their transition.
If your child is reluctant to attend, have a chat with the educators in your child's room. They will work with you on strategies to make the move from home to care feel safe and positive.
Our Settling Into Care program
Settling in is about so much more than getting through drop-off. Our Settling Into Care program is designed to support the social and emotional wellbeing of children as they build new relationships and routines.
The program focuses on the foundations of feeling secure in a new environment, including:
Feeding and mealtimes
Sleeping and rest
Toileting
Social interactions with other children
Building trusting relationships with educators
We know that children often begin their first week feeling nervous and vulnerable as they separate from their family and that is completely normal. Our educators give priority to nurturing relationships and consistent emotional support, working in partnership with you to establish strong routines.
You will never be left wondering how it is going. Your child's Settling Into Care report is published regularly through Xplor, so you can track their progress and work together with educators as they grow in confidence. The program runs for as long as your child needs until they are feeding and sleeping well and comfortable in their environment.
Saying goodbye well
Goodbyes matter. What works best is a set routine, so try to establish a calm, predictable goodbye from the orientation process onwards. Being well organised and avoiding a rush usually results in a calm start to the day.
A few tips from our educators:
Settle your child at an activity before you leave, where possible
Always tell your child when you are leaving. Sneaking out can erode trust, while a clear, warm goodbye builds it
Keep goodbyes short and positive, even if there are tears
Trust the process: there may be tears and extra tight hugs in the first few weeks, but there are always cuddles, reassurance and genuine care waiting on the other side
We will ring you if your child is distressed for a prolonged period of time - rest assured this rarely happens!
We support parents, too
Sometimes the settling-in experience is more upsetting for the family than the child and we understand that. We offer support through phone calls during the day, photos and open, honest communication. You are welcome to call the centre on (08) 6305 0999 to check in, and we can transfer you to your child's room.
What to pack for the first day
A few essentials help the first weeks go smoothly: a fitted cot sheet and comfort items for rest time, a labelled water bottle, a sun hat to stay at the centre, changes of clothes and a piece of fruit each day. Everything should be clearly labelled with your child's name. Nursery families will also need to provide nappies, bottles and formula. Our team can walk you through the full checklist at orientation.
Frequently asked questions
How long does settling in take?
Every child is different. Some children settle within days, while others need a few weeks. Our Settling Into Care program runs for as long as your child needs, and educators will keep you updated every step of the way.
What if my child cries at drop-off?
Tears at drop-off are very common in the first weeks and usually settle quickly once you have left. Educators will comfort your child, help them engage in an activity to kick-start a great day.
Can I check in during the day?
Yes. You can call the front office at any time, message your child's educator through the Playground app, or follow their progress on Xplor.
What if my child is reluctant to attend?
Speak with the educators in your child's room. They will develop strategies with you to support the transition from home to the service.
